Lunesdale Bakery was
started in 1812 with Charles Dickens then only a few weeks
old and the Battle of Waterloo yet to come, you could say we
have been here for a very long time.
The price of bread you may ask?
Well the average price for a quartern loaf in 1812 was
10 pence and over a hundred years later in 1923 bread
was 9 pence. In 1933 1lb loaves were a shilling and ten
pence a dozen.
Until 1913 we baked in the cellar when
this was banned and a new oven was built above ground.
We are one of very few traditional bakeries left; our
bread is still weighed and cut by hand. It is free
of all preservatives, modern enzymes and 'gm' grains.
The types of bread we bake and the
things we make have changed quite dramatically over
the years but we think we still have a place.
